Marvel Unleashes The Title Of It’s Newest Series!

Marvel spent the last week teasing fans with a cryptic series of their teasers. The teasers each featured M.U. a new series written by Cullen Bunn with art by Steve McNiven, Greg Land, Adam Kubert, Leinil Yu, and Salvador Larroca set to launch in January 2017.The promos promised the title to be revealed on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 6:45 PM. These teasers sent fans on a mad case of speculation on what M.U. could be. Some proposed Marvel United, a series or event that would bring the universe back together after Civil War II divided them. While others thought it could be Marvel Universe a new series starring the Fantastic Four and the Future Foundation as they rebuild the Multiverse. But now Marvel has officially announced that M.U. stands for Monsters Unleashed!

Monsters Unleashed!, a new series written by Bunn with art by McNiven, Land, Kubert, Yu, and Larroca. The title was announced at Diamond Comic Distributors’ Annual Comic Book Retailers Summit, in Baltimore, Maryland., and shared online via Diamond’s PreviewsWorld Twitter account.

Marvel has yet to release any further information about the series outside of the title, creative team and launch date, but Monsters Unleashed was the title of a black and white anthology magazine that Marvel  published for 11-issues from 1973-1975. The original Monsters Unleashed featured Marvel‘s own set of monsters including Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night and Frankenstein’s monster.

Recently Marvel has made attempts to revive their monster properties through their short live All-New, All Different Marvel series The Howling Commandos of S.H.I.E.L.D. which saw a series of L.M.D. of Dum Dum Dugan lead the monsters against supernatural threats. Within the last two weeks a few other familiar monsters popped up with Werewolf by Night apparently getting his head blown off by Deadpool for sleeping with his wife, Shiklah in last week’s Deadpool #17. This week we saw Man-Thing working with Dum Dum Dugan‘s Howling Commandos.

If this is a revival of sorts of the old anthology series, the multiple writers could each take on a separate story within each issue, or each can do an issue of one-shot stories. No matter what the format will be one thing is evident, Marvel is investing some serious top talent for it.
